Some of the distros run their own studies from time to time, but it's fair to say we've never really made much headway in running community usability studies, for various reasons.

The GNOME 3 designers mostly hang around in #gnome-design on IRC these days, though, so that would probably be the best place to corner them and ask what plans they might have for 3.4 :)
