As somebody said in the bug report, it would be easier to give an
opinion if we could see some screenshots...
Without having seen any examples, I'd probably have tried 3 or 6 first
myself, simply because most HIG spacings tend to be based on multiples
of 3. But we really need to see the options in action to give a
reasonable opinion.
