I've always been aware of the ellipsis on menus.

Here's an example of a situation where they are really
useful:
On OS X, the Apple menu has an item "Shut Down...".
This requires confirmation.
But hold down the Alt key while the menu is open, and
the ellipsis vanishes. This indicates that choosing
"Shut Down" with the Alt key held down will perform
the action without confirmation.
