The Sun open look cmdtool did something a little like this -- in
caret mode, the text was editable, e.g. with drag and drop or with
the keybindings, but in "visual" mode it wasn't.  that way you
couldn't confuse applications that relied on the screen contents
by editing the screen.

It wasn't entirely seamless, just a compromise.
