I've also done a little mockup now:

Some more details on the way I think it should work:
* When the mouse hovers the clickable area of the icon, the icons
responds by showing in higher gamma (that's how it is done right
now). The eject button stays thereby unchanged.
* When the mouse hovers the eject button, the eject button responds by
showing itself in a darker grey, whereby the device icons itself
looses focus (shows in normal gamma).
This is to clearly mark the functional difference of the two.
