More likely, gnome-session will crash too.

Seriously. It's the most functional of the session managers (the last time
I checked), but also the least reliable. I often have trouble even getting 
it to start (hide the splash screen and start responding to requests),
which I unfortunately have to do occasionally, and quite often it crashes
on exit request before anything is saved.
