I doubt that the number of applets in GNOME or in mainstream distros is
going to increase much in future. It might increase if people install lots
of funky extra applets. But those people can cope with a longer list. I
don't think it's worth making if more difficult for the majority of
people. I think that's why the new add-to-panel UI is simpler.
