Funnily enough, I submitted a bug not so long ago suggesting this might
be worth experimenting with as well:

I don't know how well it would in practice, but it would be cool if
somebody could hack up some sort of prototype. (I think the main issues
would likely be what to do with maximized windows, and whether you could
still do anything sensible if you had window grouping turned on.)
