For home use is this a little over the top I think.
Network profiles are good within work environments where you switch from
one setting to another, say daily. But the solution I'm thinking about
would be as good as that and probably less complicated.

You should go to a global proxy settings tab, so every application can
call upon that data for proxy information. But the fact if you use the
proxy or not should be independent from that settings tab.

By this you could for example have proxies configured for all of gnomes
applications. But the use of those proxies should always be configured
by the application itself, so no IE/Microsoft stuff.

Doing so you can freely choose to use or not to use a proxy (per
application) depending on your needs.

I can imagine that people with dialup connections don't want to
configure a proxy for evolution to avoid downloading heavy html mail.

So configure globally, but apply per application.
