In Linux you dont have to use 8.3 filenames, although many people do still
name their files by some sort with a dot then something to indicate the
filetype, both out of habit and because it is easier to find files if you
name them using a consistant pattern.
There is nothing stopping you from having
Pictures/file1
Spreadsheets/document1
all good programs are able to detect the file type if a file extension is
not given, using various magic (read up on how the command line utility
file works if you are really interested).
