[Usability]apps don't appear in gnome menu

Almost everytime I compile a program from src (which I do quite often on
Slackware, and it's the way I like it), it won't appear in the gnome menu.
There are some rare exceptions, but in general I have to create a launcher
myself.
Applies to 1.x as well as to 2.0.
Is there something I can do about that?
