As I said before "fixed width font" is probably the best term. I think the 
main issue is that this is sort of an advance but necessary preference. My 
hope would be that this would be the last font in the dialog eg.

standard system font
desktop font
window border font
fixed width font

(please excuse me if i´ve messed up some of the terminology, i dont currently 
have access to a copy of gnome2.) This would make the preference less 
emphasized in the dialog. However good documentation is going to be needed for 
this preference since as noted its sort of advance.
