Or maybe a "low hanging fruit" approach to try and catch things that
are easy to fix or glaringly obvious?

Gnome 2 is still not really ready for prime time, especially for people
who used to use 1.4 and now find themselves having to use gconf-edit
for things like choosing fonts or changing window managers, where there
used to be a control center capplet or a font selector that let you
choose an encoding.  Catching some of the worst problems would probably
be a very good thing.

But I accept it takes a lot of time & work :(
