Usage of <Shift> <ins> as paste
===============================
By Hasbullah Bin Pit <sebol ikhlas com>

This Document is report of my study shift-ins usage based of limited number
of people. And there are a lot's of people seem like dont care about it.
Although the title is about <Shift> <ins>, but <ctrl> <ins> and
<ctrl> <del> counted as similiar thing.

It will explain:
1. how the research done.
  1.1 bincang.net
  1.2 mypenguin99
2. Why Shift ins must be available at gnome HIG.
2.1 ctrl-v, ctrl-c too much conflicting compared with
    shift ins and ctrl ins
  2.2 conflicting ctrl-c, ctrl-v

3. Why must we encourage of shift ins usage compare to ctrl-v
3.1 ctrl-v,ctrl-c is bad habbit for N*X user.

1. How the research done
-------------------------
the need and history:

I personally use shift ins as paste since win311/turbopascal 1994.
i still remember if i'm not mistaken the word 'shift ins' is available
beside paste at edit menu.
so in windows, i always paste as shift+ins.

but in Linux, i used middle mouse button as click. it's fast when i copy
by selecting using mouse.
but during work that need more kbd attension, like using gnumeric, abiword
AND after switching using alt tab, I always intend to shift ins.

I'm very frustraed when i tried gnumeric 0.7.4 and i cant paste using
shift ins after copying using kbd. but it's solved automticcaly when
newer gnumeric comeout. I talked to my self, "maybe they want to comply
with the guideline."
so i check at HIG, but 'shift ins' is not available as 'paste'

I'm start wondering why it's not included. so when i check most apps at
windows and gnome, the shift ins is not available beside paste in edit menu.
(But it can be used in windows)

so i file gnome bugzilla #68850
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68850
in "general" when HIG category is not exist yet
no one reply is for several days :(

"Am i the only person left using shift+ins?"

Doing survey:
Since i live in the world full of ctrl-v user, I'm start looking for friend
who used to use shift ins.
I did 2 poll

1.1 poll at bincang.net:
     -----------------
bincang.net (a forum category contained mix of win and linux user)
    http://bincang.net/forum/showthread.php?&threadid=6376
    ('lihat keputusan' = show result)
the output on 7 feb 2002 is:-
shift ins = 1 (which is me)
                 ctrl-v = 11
rightclick,choose paste = 3

This is bad, i cant find my shift ins friend :(
but "Obi-Wan_Kenobi" said, he used to middle click in linux, but
used shift ins when he was young at qbasic.

but there are 2 ppl who advocate ctrl-v

1.2 Poll and discussion at mypenguin99:
     -------------------------------
Mypenguin99 is a linux mailing list most of it linux user for malaysian,
but there are linux user by 'putty.exe' (use windows as desktop)
the question is "how do u paste when u use windows"
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mypenguin99/ (the poll require login)
the mailing list contained about 200 member.

 The poll result is here
  shift ins = 2
     ctrl v = 7

but this is not the actual result, there are many ppl lazy to vote,
so from mailing list i've identify several person claimed paste
 using shift ins

#1 Maznan , use slackware age 29
#2 EiNiD, age 27, shift ins since 1995, using comp since 1991
#3 langsuir , using shift ins at crt terminal.

from the discussion,
 * There are 3,4 ctrl-v advocator who suggest to use ctrl-v (and ctrl-c)
 * There are one girl (azrina) advocate ctrl-v, but she use windows as i
desktop and thought that shift ins is available in gnome by saying
   'user can choose'.
 * yuzz, suggesting that user should given choice.
 * hanks suggesting adding "paste" button near 'ins','home','del' :)
 * izham telling that the discussion is not importance, 'if u want to
add just add' and tellling that it's not related do developement
   toward linux community.
 * Obelicks suggesting drafting a standard

Other input:
 * Witra, from jaring.pcbase newgroup told me that he use shift ins for paste
 * From a conversation with a woman (Suraya Ibrahim) , quite power user,
never heard that user can paste using shift ins in windows.
This probably becoz shift ins no longer displayed beside paste in
windows. most her friend (woman) also use mouse file-> edit-> paste
to paste. (woman from 3rd world country)
 * Quotemstr, galeon developer claimed he use shift ins, because of he
is left handed, posted some comment to bugzilla.
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68850 (i paste it again)
 * Menthos, swedish hyperactive transltor, pointing URL of win311
shortcut keys at bugzilla , probably he still use it.

2. Why Shift ins must be available at gnome HIG.
------------------------------------------------
base on research above, i think there are enough reason to put
shift ins as paste at HIG, together with ctrl-v (or hide ctrl-v)

I havent enough study about ctrl ins and ctrl del, probably
need to be implemented if there is no coflict

Here is some other reason
2.1 unix CLI culture
base on unix CLI culture ctrl-c is wellknown as break/end/terminate
we do ctrl-c when, canceling wget, make, shell script, bla bla bla.
It's hard for N*X user to teach ppl that "CTRL-C" is for "copy"

ctrl-v, in vi insert mode purposely to create control char,
for example, ctrl+v followed by ctrl+m will generate ^M

2.2 Shift ins has no conflict with other keybinding.

3. Why Shift ins must become recommended method for paste
---------------------------------------------------------
(to be displayed beside edit -> paste menu i instead of ctrl-c/ctrl-v)

3.1 if in xterm, in vi N*X user can paste using shift ins,
suppose to she/he can also paste in gnome apps using the same method.

but IF ctrl-c, ctrl-v become recommendation,
user will feel difficulty when she/he attemp to:-
     - paste using ctrl-v in vi
     - copy using ctrl-c in pine (ctrl-c mean compose)
     - i_dont_use_emacs_but_surely_there_are_conflict_there

by trying to make N*X user use shift ins ctrl ins,
we actually reduce the conflict headache,
emacs ppl also can add shift+ins/ ctrl+ins as alternative copy/paste method.

----- End of Shift+ins Propaganda. :) ------8<--------
