Indeed. It would be nice to do this "better" than the simple grid system
that most system use though - usually when I put icons towards the right
side of the screen, they align maybe 1.5 columns to the left of the edge or
something like that. It'd be nice to have icons snap to a grid but have the
grids around the edges with the "weird" blank space in the middle, not at
the bottom and right edges...

It's actually 4 in nautilus, IIRC. Full, Full-Accept (when the user is
dragging a file and hovering over the trash), Empty, and Empty-Accept.

Indeed. It's supposed to change based on the background color already, the
reason it doesn't change on light backgrounds is an overflow bug in eel
AFAIK - though I don't believe it ever changed based on the individual icon,
which would be ideal.
