Functionally, I can't think of an especially convincing reason off the
top of my head, but I'm sure it'll come to me in the bath later  :)

You would lose the only visual indication that a dialog box is modal,
though-- by current convention, an "OK" button would only appear in a
modal dialog.  But that's admittedly not much of an argument.
