Well, there are a few reasons why we didn't do this:

1. It makes the development process longer and is not so nice for us as 
maintainers.

2. I wanted to be able to do make install and have it installed for me 
here. Distributions will of course do what they want anyway.

Not a bad idea. I would be happy to accept patches if you wanted to work 
on such a proposal ;)
