What is it? ===========

Tracker is a semantic data storage for desktop and mobile devices.
Tracker uses W3C standards for RDF ontologies using Nepomuk with
SPARQL to query and update the data.

Nice - I just compiled it, and I have a question: is has the status
icon disappeared? I can't find it anymore.

Yes. It's not relevant for users most of the time and it was removed because of the introduction of GNOME shell too.

Also, it seems that the email indexing is not working - I compiled it,
but I can not find the plugin to install in thunderbird?

One thing currently missing is the miner status updates here for tracker-control to pick this up. You should notice the progress in Thunderbird itself on the status bar at the bottom right.

If you still have problems, please file a bug.

I would have preferred checkinstall, but that one did not work

checkinstall?
