We could have a filter that translate those special character into the
plain version: Ã -> a, Ã -> a (or even ae, in german).

Could you please open a feature request in bugzilla for that?

Szilveszter Farkas did it for Hungarian some time ago, also using the
snowball analyzer. Check this thread:
