Quite a substantial number of people use gmail now, perhaps it would be an idea to "index" e-mails from gmail?
It should be possible, here is a gnome-deskbar applet which searches gmail e-mails using the google api:
http://svn.kryogenix.org/svn/deskbar-plugins/tags/LATEST/gmail-deskbar-hack.py. This wouldn't really be indexing of course, but the GUI (tracker-search-tool) could use something similar.
