[Shotwell] Slow import from Nikon D3100 connected via USB

I have improved the speed of image download from my camera by installing exfat support.

I had tried to bypass the camera problem by plugging the SD card directly into a card-reader slot on my iMac, 
and the resulting error message led me to the link above.

I can now copy my images into Shotwell using the camera’s USB connection or copy direct - in general, I 
prefer to leave the card in the camera, as mechanical damage is less likely.
