I use xconsole without problems:

    xconsole -daemon -verbose -font -*-fixed-medium-r-normal--10-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 -geometry 1280x4+0-0 -saveLines 10000

This makes it a strip on the lower side of the display,
about 5 lines high.  In sawfish it is configured to show up
on every workspace, no borders, excluded from task switch,
focus, and windows won't bump into it when moving around.
