Any output in .xsession-errors or stderr, if started from terminal

Wierd. When you attempt to start Appearance you get the message:
*** Remote sawfish error: (error "can't parse tar file listing line
(GNU or Solaris tar required): -rw-r--r-- test-32/test-32 60
2009-12-23 03:47 gradient/README\012")
(test-32 is the user name).
Now, I can "tar
-txzf /usr/share/sawfish/1.6.0/themes/gradient.tar.gz" successfully,
A complaint is not about a failed listing but that sawfish cannot
parse a line from that listing. The line quoted in your error
message looks quite innocent but I wonder if '-' signs in
"test-32/test-32" user designation are not spooking a parser.
Everything else appears to be "normal enough"; not even "weird"
characters in file names.

perhaps there are old fragments from
$prefix/libexecdir/{librep,sawfish} beeing used?
No, it was a fresh install of F12 on a new partition, and a compile on
that install.
