Trouble building 1.3.4

OK, I admit that I don't know squat about libtool.

I tried to build sawfish 1.3.4 and got a complaint that
"/usr/lib/libgmp.la" didn't exist. Since my distribution (openSUSE
11.0) doesn't seem to supply it even in the development packages, I
found a somewhat out-of-date copy on the Web, hacked it up, and
installed it in /usr/lib.

Now I'm getting:

/usr/local/libexec/rep/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libtool --mode=link gcc -export-dynamic \
          -o sawfish colors.o cursors.o display.o events.o fonts.o frames.o functions.o images.o keys.o main.o multihead.o pixmap-cache.o property-cache.o server.o session.o stacking-list.o windows.o -L/usr/local/lib -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/local/lib -lrep -ldl -lcrypt -lgmp -lm -lpangoxft-1.0 -lpangoft2-1.0 -lXft -lXrender -lfontconfig -lfreetype -lz -lpangox-1.0 -lX11 -lpango-1.0 -lgobject-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0 \

gcc: /usr/lib//.libs/libgmp.so: No such file or directory

What the heck is gcc doing looking in /usr/lib/.libs? There is a
libgmp.so in /usr/lib where it belongs. What am I doing wrong?

The DMCA criminalizes curiosity. It would put Susie in jail for
taking her stereo apart to see how it works.
