I see what you mean; that's "make" on the command-line, I failed to
notice that.

Okay, I just compiled it successfully with this:

| make "rep_LIBTOOL = /usr/libexec/rep/i486-slackware-linux-gnu/libtool --tag=CC"

Incremental success!  The bane of time management!
