I noticed I caused some confusion too, with a bug in $SUBJECT ;)

In fact, I believe vala should behave as C#, and refuse calling an instance method from a constructor, at least not before the base constructor was executed. I've reported this against Vala as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=611490.
