Well, RB compiles cleanly now on my 32bit machine :)

I first tried Apple Remote 2.0 (199), the PIN entry comes up but nothing
seems to happen after that. Since this isn't expected to work right now
I gave up for now, and moved on to plan B... I downgraded to Apple
Remote 1.3.3 (4) but still have the same symptoms: Immediately after
entering the PIN in RB, the iPod pops up an error message:

This remote has been unregistered from "Laptop Music". Please select
another library.

>From some preliminary debugging, I suspect RB isn't getting the GUID
from the iPod until too late.  While waiting for the GUID to be registered,
I see loads of login attempts from the iPod. Only when I quit the
Remote App does RB see the (old?) reply with the GUID information.
This is a single core laptop - could this be a threading issue?
