I'm afraid that I haven't heard of any attempts to do this, although it
does certainly sound like a useful improvement to the music player
syncer in Rhythmbox.
Just as a note to anybody who wants to look into this - ffmpeg can
actually encode to 'ALAC' (Apple's Lossless Audio Codec), with a similar
compression ratio to flac. I'm not sure if it's exposed in gstreamer
yet, but for iPods this would be preferable to just using a wave file,
if the codec is installed.
(With appropriate gstreamer plugins, you can actually play alac files in
rhythmbox, although I haven't tested syncing them with an iPod yet.)
