Agreed. I'm using:
Ubuntu Intrepid 2.6.27-11-generic
glib 2.18.2-0ubuntu2.1
which is the latest and greatest from Ubuntu, so I imagine any developer on any Ubuntu is going to run into problems.
Sounds like this newly-created (3/30) eggdesktopfile.c is incompatible
with glib < 2.19.8, unless -fno-strict-aliasing gets into the
Makefile.
Oh and thank you for the easy workaround...

Looks like it. I'm using glib-2.18.4 with gcc-4.3.3 on x86.
