Problem is resolved. Apparently Rhythmbox doesn't like pulseaudio. I had been playing around with the settings in the sound control to try to fix another problem and had switched to pulseaudio. Switching to OSS or ALTA fixes the problem. By the way, I'm running Fedora 9, forgot to mention that.
