This suggestion has been floated a few times by different people. It
has been called the play queue or a Jukebox mode. It has not yet made
a sufficient impression on the people that matter and make things
happen to find its way in.
In the most recent flurry, I piped in with:

which I just re-read and still seems like a good idea. The mock-up
pointed to in the message is no longer accessible, but a slightly
modified version now lives here.
