Ahh..  ok, and I'm using LC_COLLATE=C because I can't stand
case-insensitive sorting in file pickers..  and so I see..  if I run
rhythmbox as:

LC_COLLATE=en_US rhythmbox

then everything sorts fine.  So I guess it's my own configuration
causing problems, then.
