Monkey's Audio is a lossless codec.

MusePack (.mpc files) is a lossy codec, "designed for transparency". It
uses ID3 and APE tags.

APE is a tagging format, that was introduced with Monkey's Audio (I think).
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/ is a good source of information.
