This is an unrelated GStreamer bug.

Try:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/rhythmbox/state/volume -t float 1.0

If you have to do this it probably means you didn't install rhythmbox's
GConf schemas correctly.  

Of course we really need to make the volume widget work...
