Yes, a seperate source seems like a good idea, .. so that the ipod
tunes show up seperately from your local library and you can drag
and drop between them (this is how itunes does it).  Of course using 
the gnome-vfs if one is on the way (/me goes to check it out).

Not sure how itunes handles local playlists being xfered to the
ipod.  I'm guessing it does a bidirection sync of all playlists
when the device is plugged in (with one or the other taking presidence 
in case of conflicts).
