That is basically a usability study. Could ask on usability list for
help with this. Or some art list if they know something which is able to
contain loads of images.

Wonder if we should make the goal clear or not. I think towards the
users we want to be silent. IMO just announce that we want to see how
they are using GNOME. As basically, this is what we're interested in.
Perhaps we will discover something from that.

Of course, target audience is limited to just the people who see the
screenshot request and can actually be bothered to reply.
