The new API I'm adding to cairo has to be tested by using them in Pango.
So the alternatives are:

  - Use them in a Pango branch, to merge in trunk for next release
cycle,

  - Use them in a Pango branch, then merge to current devel tree at the
last minute when cairo 1.8 is released,

Neither solve my problem which is that I want to get the Pango features
relying on cairo 1.8 API to get testing, to make me feel comfortable
putting them in cairo 1.8...

By all means consider cairo a GNOME module as far as development is
concerned.
