Mallard and hackfest update?

I'm reviewing the commits from the last days of the documentation
hackfest, and I saw J5's blog[1] and upload the alpha Python docs[2].
But what is the difference with using mallard? Is it faster or just
more sane than gtkdoc-mkhtml?
