Well, it sounds really strange.
Are you sure your network is correctly configured and that you can join
it  ?
This could be some weirdness with bonobo and machine name resolution.
Otherwise, after upgrading, did you killed the oaf or bonobo deamon ?
(like bonobo-slay and oaf-slay - note that it's better run those without
gnome being started).
