It's been a while since I looked at this, but what I remember was that
we could avoid it for file:// URIs. However, it was harder to avoid for
trash and desktop.
In the end, the net gain was not noticeable, since Nautilus wants both
file://, desktop:// and trash:// before it does anything. I looked into
that too, but it was looking like too much work in the time frame we had
then. Also, GVFS startup didn't look like a big hit in the profiles
(though it might be bigger where seeks matter more).
