Great summary Sandy, thank you.

I think having an 'edit' button in Evince is a great alternative to
merging the two products or re-writing pdf-mod as a plugin.

I would have no objections to this and it sounds very distro friendly too.

Maybe Evince could detect if pdf-mod is installed and then enable the
'edit' button (as to not confuse the users when it's not installed).
