I wouldn't necessarily have said it quite that way. F6 for a long time
has been a common way to switch between panes in an application window.
I actually think that it's possible that the alert being added to the
cycle in Firefox may have happened more recently, but if so, it was
added so that it would make it easier to find, not more difficult as you
seem to be suggesting. I seem to recall a time not long ago when alerts
were near impossible to read. It required some flat review gymnastics
just to get to that part of the window, and even then only what you
could get to using the tab key would be read. Then along came the alert
being accessible via the f6 shortcut, and that changed everything. It
did take a bit for me to find it, but once I did, finding the alert
became much easier.
