Right, a USB headset will probably do the trick. But it is
unclear if the OP is doing an install or if they are want to run
Linux off a USB drive indefinately. It would be a bummer to have
to use a USB headset all the time. The OP said the USB drive works
on other Dell laptops so I am going to say Mint doesn't have the
kernel module (driver) for the sound card in the problematic
laptop. This would probably be fixed by doing an install to the
hard drive. Or you could try to add the drivers to the USB drive
by doing an update. If you've installed Linux to the USB drive,
you can just use your distro's update feature, whatever that is.
If you're booting from a live image, you'll have to download and
re-install the whole image.

Hi folks,
Already know probably won't get help on this one, and it's more of a
shot in the dark. Just picked up a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 3501.
It has the following audio controllers:
Realtek ALC3204
Cirrus Logic CS8409 (CS42L42 + SN005825)
Running Linux Mint. Sound simply won't work upon booting from USB. I
have a couple other Dell Inspiron's sitting here, and works just fine.
Boot from USB, press Ctrl+Alt+T to get to terminal, type "orca", and
my beloved screen reader starts talking to me.
I know the sound card does indeed work on this laptop because when I
boot to the Windows setup screen, that lady starts talking to me, so
that's not the issue. Have confirmed with sighted folks volume is
100% and it's not muted, so I don't know.
Anyone else ever experience this? Any neat solution?
Thanks,
Matt
