I didn't find it very easy at all to set shortcut keys via a script
using MATE's or GNOME's shortcut key mechanism, although it should be
possible to do it using gsettings if you know how a keyboard setting
shortcut should look and the schema and key it belongs to. An easier way
to set shortcut keys may be to install xbindkeys, write the shortcut
definitions into one or more configuration files and add
xbindkeys -f /path/to/xbindkeys/config
to the startup applications. You can do this as many times as you like,
or just use a single file for all your xbindkeys shortcuts. In either
case, you can easily write the file(s) from scratch within your script.
Xbindkeys is especially useful on multi-desktop systems, as it works on
every desktop environment. I will freely admit that this is rather
unconventional, but it definitely gets the job done. I hope it helps
that part of your script.
