Re: [orca-list] first impressions of novice linux user, who's primary system is Windows and primary screen reader is NVDA

Hello

I would recommend you check out the Linux Mint - mate addition.

I had a bit of trouble getting it to work with my wifi but I signed up on there forums and with there help, managed to solve the issue. This was an old mac book pro though, which was probably why I had a wifi problem after install. None what so ever with my PC's. They just worked right out of the box and if your looking for that kind of setup, then go for it. I tried Ubuntu, but I just don't favour the user interface but this is the wonderful thing about Linux which I am discovering myself. the mate desktop does remind me very much of windows which is another reason why I am suggesting it. Start menu anyone?

Here is the direct link below. Good luck in your quest for finding the right distro which you find most comfortable to use.

Hello,

as you see, I'm new on the linux and I'm learning it, when I have
enough time to do it. It means, that sometimes there are many weeks
without touching a VM with Linux.
Perhaps it would be silly question, but anyway... My primary research
system is Ubuntu, currently on version 20.10 with Gnome as a graphical
environment. I tried with Fedora 34, but sadly it has been stopped
immediately after installing into VM due to inability to use Orca.
Firstly it has not started, after suggestion provided on this list, it
started, but TTS (espeak - audio) has not been heard. When I have
pressed one key, I heard only the first micro sequence of audio which
should have been spoken.
I wanted to test Fedora, because it contains Gnome version 40. I
hoped, that I would check if there are more buttons, which are labled
and so I can use GUI more comfortably. In Ubuntu, where is currently
Gnome 3.38, Orca often said "number" push button or something like
that. And I also cannot set innitial settings like date and time.

I know, that Linux is primary system which is managed via command
line, but if there are GUI's I would expect, that they would allow me
to navigate me without problems mostly. I expected that Gnome would be
accessible, due to Orca is a part of that project.
So please, help me, what should I set in my distro to use it more
comfortably and how to force Ubuntu to upgrade to latest version. when
I'm checking for update, it tells me, that there is no upgrade for me.

Another questions will follow, when I'm going to research it more in
debth, if it is acceptable for you.

Excuse me, if I asked silly questions and if I was impolite.

Thanks again for your kind help.

regards,
Jožef
