What I'm not understanding is, where do GNOME and mate fit in?
GNOME, KDE Plasma, Mate, XFCE, etc., are all graphical desktop
environments. Unlikemost other operating systems, Linux gives you a
choice of desktop environments in which to run applications. It's also
possible to run Linux without a graphical desktop environment at all, in
a purely text mode. However, you need a desktop environment in order to
run graphical applications such as modern Web browsers, graphical email
clients, etc.
There are plenty of Web sites that will provide a good introduction in
greater detail than I have offere here.
