I'd say discuss with the main developer *before* experimenting.
Otherwise the chances are high that you go into a wrong direction,
that he'll not accept, and him asking you to redesign the whole thing
and thus do the work twice. Of course you'd not be keen on doing this,
and prefer to fork the project, and thus fragmentize the general
accessibility effort, which is not a good thing.

Yes, discussion at length without action is also not a good thing, but
it does make a lot of sense to discuss at least to some extent before
acting.
