react os and kde are both broken. With kde you have to have a properly
configured speech-dispatcher before any of the screen readers will run
and speak. Perhaps making allowance for a hardware speech synthesizer
on a port in both of those systems might give them a bridge to set up
further accessibility.

Ah maybe that was part of my problem. Although I seem to recall getting the
infamous blue screen instead of an error related to sound drivers when I tried
to run NVDA. Still, that could explain why I didn't even hear the startup
chime chord, although I didn't recall it even getting that far.
