Re: [orca-list] reading epub's using orca, possible?

There's a concern that if you make the text accessible to a screen reader then there's a chance it could be captured and reproduced thus cutting out the publisher. This is why publishers are still allowed to keep books from being accessible in places like Amazon. the same concern exists over audio books which is why books from the NLS can only be played on certain devices. I'm not sure when you reached out to the developers of Calibre but it might have been before the copyright law in the US was changed allowing people to convert copyrighted books into other formats for the purposes of making them accessible. My only point is that I don't find the responses of the Calibre developers to be so absurd or stupid.

Calibre?????

I can't read anything except part of the menus in Calibre, but not the actual text of the books.

By the way, years ago I contacted the devs to report the fact that ebooks weren't accessible with screen readers.

I got a really absurd reply, i.e., they couldn't make the text accessible because of copyright rules... ROFL!!!

I pointed out to them that, if ebooks can't be read by the blind because of copyright, then they shouldn't be available to sighted people either...

It was a stupid answer they gave me, and they never replied to my second email.

Meanwhile, at least some parts of the menus are readable, but not the books, unless Orca is smarter than NVDA on this, which I'd love...

Ciao,
