Now, I have the opposite problem, no speech, but Braille works. I
think I have no speech because I have speech dispatcher system wide
and there seems to be no way to tell it the correct port which is an
environment variable. I have never found a way to get an environment
variable into gdm.

When I run Gdm (GNOME 3.32.2, Arch Linux), Orca starts speaking,
but the braille display simply reads "screen not in text mode".
After I log in, the braille display is detected by Orca as usual,
and works as expected.
What do I need to change to enable braille output during the log-in process?
There's also an unlabelled button in the GDM log-in dialogue.
